Beware of Poly Cystic Ovary Syndromes

About one in ten women experience Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) - considered the cause of many cases of female infertility.

In patients with PCOS, normal ovulation every month does not occur resulting in an imbalance of estrogen and progesterone and high levels of testosterone.  This disturbance of hormonal balance results in irregular menstrual periods and infertility.

PCOS also results in insulin resistance, which increases the risk of miscarriage, heart disease, and diabetes.  If this condition is combined with overflow of androgen-the "male" hormone - which often causes excessive hair and hormone growth, PCOS can be a frustrating condition.  Exercise, weight loss, and medication can help you control your symptoms and increase your chances of getting pregnant healthy.

Ask your doctor about the possibility of you suffering from PCOS if there are at least one of the following symptoms:
  • Irregular menstruation, rare, or not at all - Difficult to get pregnant
  • Increased growth of hair on the face, chest, stomach, back, or fingers
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Pimples, oily skin, or dandruff
  • Excessive weight accumulation in the middle part of the body
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Levels of cholesterol and / or high blood pressure
  • There are parts of the skin that darken behind the neck, armpits, or inner thighs
  • Skin folds (small looseness of skin  excessive) in the armpits, neck area, or under the breast
