What Happened to a Woman's Body in Their 40s

Changes in middle age occur between the ages of 40 to 65 years. For many women, this period is enough to change their lives and physical appearance. The following are specific changes in women entering their 40s and above.

Increase in Body Weight and Decrease Muscle Mass

In fact, both men and women will begin to lose muscle tissue as they age. However, women aged 40 and over tend to lose 223 grams of muscle a year.

According to Dr. Pamela Peeke, author of "Body for Life" when we lose muscle, our metabolism decreases and we burn fewer calories. This, of course, leads to weight gain,  the body continuously after the age of 40 years.

Decreased bone mass

Until a woman reaches 35 years of age, bone density remains more or less the same. But after passing this age, women lose 1 percent of bone mass each year. This reduction in bone mass can be slowed by regular weight training. Weight training also helps to make bone mass denser and bones stronger

Perimenopause symptoms

The average age of early perimenopause is 47 years but can occur sooner or later. The transition period from the reproductive period to menopause is characterized by a decrease in estrogen levels and also other hormones. You may experience hot flashes, changes in the menstrual cycle or difficulty sleeping.

Hormonal changes

When the thyroid gland is aging, the function becomes less effective and produces too little or too much thyroid hormone. This results in symptoms such as weight gain, temperature intolerance (can't stand cold or hot temperatures), fatigue and constipation and diarrhea. The pancreas may also lose the ability to process insulin as before so that blood glucose levels might rise and cause diabetes.

Breast cancer

The National Cancer Institute notes that 1 in 233 women in their 30s has a risk of developing breast cancer. However, after reaching the age of 40-49 years, the risk increased 1 to 69.
