Gastritis, Causes, Signs & symptoms

Gastritis is a condition in which the lining of the skin in the stomach is inflamed or swollen. Gastritis or inflammation of the stomach can appear suddenly (acute gastritis) or last for a long time (chronic gastritis). Many people call gastritis as an ulcer, whereas gastritis is different from an ulcer.

Gastritis is harmless and can be cured with certain medications. However, in some cases, gastritis is a condition that can be a symptom of stomach acid pain and can even increase the risk of stomach cancer.

How common is gastritis?

Gastritis is a very common condition and is more common in people who take painkillers, anti-pain, or alcoholism. If we can reduce the trigger factors, then it can also reduce the risk of gastritis. You need to discuss this with your doctor for more information.

Differences between ulcers and gastritis

The ulcer is a layman's term to describe a condition with a collection of symptoms such as complaints of abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, chest pain such as burning, bloating, arousal, and mouth feeling sour. So, the ulcer itself is not a disease, but as a symptom that indicates certain diseases' presence.

The above symptoms can appear in people who have gastritis, but other diseases such as GERD and peptic ulcer can also have symptoms that are often referred to as ulcers by people.

The scientific definition of the ulcer itself does not exist until now. It could be that what someone means by heartburn is gastritis. However, this can only be ascertained by a doctor's examination.

As explained above before, gastritis is inflammation of the gastric mucosa. Acute and chronic gastritis conditions, if left unchecked, can cause ulcers

This condition is a painful wound that develops in the lining of the stomach or small intestine. Gastric ulcers can occur in areas where there are acids or enzymes.

Signs & symptoms of Gastritis

People who suffer from this condition more often do not have any symptoms until they are diagnosed. However, you must be vigilant if you have these symptoms:

  • loss of appetite
  • nausea and vomiting
  • pain in the upper abdomen
  • feeling full even though you just ate a little

If your stomach wall is bleeding, you may have these symptoms:

  • black stool
  • vomiting blood or dark-colored coffee liquid
  • There are still several other symptoms not mentioned above. If you are worried about these symptoms, consult a doctor immediately.

When should I see a doctor?

You can visit your doctor if your symptoms have not disappeared. You also need to tell your doctor if your stomach feels uncomfortable after taking medication, especially aspirin or other painkillers. Besides, if you vomit blood or have a bloody bowel movement, you should immediately see a doctor resolve the problem.

What causes gastritis?

Common causes of gastritis are:

  • Take pain medications such as aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Frequent consumption of alcohol
  • Stomach infections caused by the bacterium Helicobacter pylori
  • Autoimmune diseases (such as severe anemia)
  • Reflux of bile into the stomach
  • Cocaine abuse
  • Stress

Why should pain medications be avoided?

The side effects of pain medications can cause gastrointestinal damage. Damage to the digestive tract is caused by this drug's mechanism and ingredients in inhibiting the COX enzyme (cyclooxygenase) in the stomach. Simply stated, this COX enzyme is an enzyme that is responsible for pain stimulation.

It turns out, besides being responsible for the mechanism of pain, the COX enzyme is also responsible for the defense of the skin layer in the stomach because the inhibition of COX enzymes in the stomach from painkillers will cause erosion of the stomach wall.

As a result, the stomach becomes susceptible to irritation by stomach acid when exposed to it continuously. Thus, gastric bleeding can occur. If this condition continues, the stomach will be hollow. In medical conditions, this condition is referred to as gastric perforation.

Gastric perforation can cause stomach contents to leak into the abdominal cavity and cause infection. Now, if the stomach cavity has been infected, it will cause peritonitis, which is an infection of the tissue lining the inside of the stomach. This infection can cause complications that make various organs in the body stop functioning. This condition is a medical emergency and can be life-threatening.
